There’s a new company name in your inbox every day promising the solution to all tomorrow’s problems. Think back to the trucking industry of 10 years ago and there were long-term partners with whom you were on a first-name basis. With new names and new companies come new ideas and new energy–solutions that we couldn’t have dreamed of a decade ago. But how do you know what solutions are right for your fleet, and more importantly–who do you call when you face a challenge?
It’s fun to make new relationships in the industry, but those tried-and-true solutions providers you’ve worked with for years are also tracking the latest trends in autonomous technology, connectivity, electric vehicles and even artificial intelligence. Consider Hendrickson–a go-to supplier for suspensions, wheel ends, brakes and beyond, but the company’s Advanced Technology Group has been exploring trucking technology since 2007 behind the scenes.
“We’re not really pure research, but we’re looking at solutions that are not yet proven in our field,” explained Jeff Zawacki, vice president of advanced technology, Advanced Technology Group, Hendrickson, who highlighted the importance of understanding fleet applications. “Oftentimes it’s about having a deeper understanding of what the customer really needs and relentlessly pursuing ways to achieve that.”
In an industry where technology adoption can be slow (at least historically), Zawacki noted that Hendrickson’s collaborative approach stands out. Historically, the company has engaged in significant collaborations, including joint ventures and marketing agreements with global partners. These partnerships have expanded Hendrickson’s technological and global reach. Hendrickson also collaborates closely with OEM partners well in advance of vehicle launches to integrate technologies into new vehicle and product platforms.
As commercial vehicle systems become more intelligent, partnerships become increasingly crucial. Hendrickson’s Watchman wheel-end sensor technology is an example of the Advanced Technology Group’s efforts.
“We couldn’t do that without strong collaborations,” Zawacki acknowledged.
The relationship between fleets and suppliers is mutually beneficial. Fleets gain access to innovative solutions that enhance their competitiveness, while suppliers receive valuable insights to fine-tune their offerings. As the commercial vehicle industry continues to evolve, the collaborative efforts between Hendrickson and its partners will be instrumental in navigating the complexities of new technologies.
